Fresh Faced with Burts Bees

I love makeup: I absolutely love the ability to change up looks, to try new products and beauty innovations, to paint with color, and to express a bit of myself in a centuries-old tradition. For the last couple of years, as Ali and I approached our wedding and I got closer (and crossed over the threshold) to my 30s, my primary beauty investment has been in my skin. It has become paramount above all matters of vanity to make sure my skin is healthy, moisturized, hydrated, and protected from environmental and sun damage. I've committed to a strict routine of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing, and then I have fun with makeup, with the added bonus of makeup going on more smoothly, evenly, and needing to do less "work" by getting my skin into great shape. Now, as the seasons shift and I reexamine my daily beauty routine to match my skin's needs, I'm opting as I tend to do in the warmer months for lighter, moisturizing, and nourishing products. Enter: Burt's Bees BB Cream. When BB Creams first entered the North American market as an import from Korea, they were toted as an all-in-one miracle product, and they are! They're most comparable in texture to tinted moisturizer, and Burt's Bees BB Cream is packed with SPF, Noni Extract (derived from a tree that is evergreen in the Pacific Islands and promotes healing and reduces the sign of aging, source), and illuminates and brightens the skin with sheer coverage. It's like, my skin plus a great Instagram filter - just a little bit of blur and a subtle highlight. In addition to having great properties, Burt's Bees BB Cream is also free of all the junk we don't want on our face: no parabens, no petroleum (something I have a sensitivity to, anyways), no parafins, and NO animal testing (I know how important this is to so many of you). For now, Burt's Bees BB Cream comes in 3 shades: light, light-medium, and medium. While the light-medium is the closest "match" for me, the truth is that they all are so easy to blend and go on smooth that it's less about matching to your skin tone and more about, to keep up with my Instagram analogy, choosing what kind of filter you want: a little cooler or a little warmer, (I couldn't find any reviews or swatches for dark skin, however). Take for example the photos below: mid-application of Burt's Bees BB Cream and next with the addition of Burt's Bees Lipstick in "Fuschia Flood." Beauty hack: I also used the Burt's Bees Lipstick in "Sunset Cruise" (it's a sheer, buildable coral) on my cheeks for a flush of color. I love cream blushes, especially in the summer, and the 100% natural formula of the lipsticks makes it a great multi-tasker and beauty bag workhorse.Full disclosure: I do have lash extensions, but literally the only makeup I'm wearing on my skin in these photos is Burt's Bees BB Cream and Burt's Bees Lipstick. Sure, I might go a bit heavier for photoshoots and fancy events, but I'm pretty stoked to have a new, budget-friendly default for spring and summer!
