The Roaring 20's: Jazz Age Lawn Party
I love that an event like this exists in New York City - and better yet, on Governors Island, one of the most uniquely preserved parts of the city. Governors Island dubs itself "the 6th borough," but can you imagine a borough of new york city without almost any of modern days conveniences? A part of New York City without bodegas or a duane reade or a starbucks? It's like a heavenly timewarp, with stately mansions and green pastures and the occasional summer concert or 1920's style throwback. Of course, being an island, you also need to take a ferry to get there.
Oh, as you're scrolling through pictures, keep in mind that it was a solid 95 degrees, and HUMID, the entire day!
For the most part, people came dressed out to the nines. Some even bringing other relics of the past, like this twinlens camera.
My own outfit was somewhat of a last ditch effort. I wore a pearl necklace courtesty of City Chic, a peter-pan collar top from Topshop, a highwaisted black circle skirt, Marc by Marc ivory framed bag, and pearled T-straps from Topshop.
My partner looked rather dapper, with a mallard tie and suspenders, with the requisite buttown-down, khakis, and beeswax desert boots.

I was most impressed with how the men were dressed! Can you imagine if (more) men still put as much thought into the way they dressed?
It was also the perfect setting for a picnic. This gentleman opted to assemble his hors d'oeuvres on the lawn.
If you missed this event, you can try to hustle over to Governors Island today for a repeat, or head out on August 28th or August 29th, when the roaring twenties has yet another redux. It's worth going for the live bands alone - not to mention the beauty of the island itself!
