CATHERINE OPIE vs. GILBERT and GEORGE
okay, so the two camps are certainly not in opposition, and their mediums and styles could not be further apart, but i'm desperately craving an art fix from both. catherine opie is an american photographer who explores ideas of gender, sexuality, normativity, and popular culture, and george&gilbert are a british mixed-media duo who remind me of devo and the talking heads and kaleidescopes. they're different, but they're both showing now:
opie is showing at the guggenheim, now through january 7, '09.
1071 Fifth Avenue (at 89th Street), New York, NY 10128
gilbert&george at the brooklyn museum, now through january 11, '09.
200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, New York 11238
p.s., did you know that tatty devine (another favorite british duo of mine) made a gilbert&george inspired collection? no? now you do.
