{Fall Feelings} 10 Things to Wear
Last week I talked about all the things I wanted to do this fall, but let's be completely real: one of the most exciting things about fall, for me, is the fashion. I know, for a second there you thought I was going to say Pumpkin-Spice-Latte, but, secret revealed: I think they're disgusting. I'm not going to beat a dead horse by waxing poetic, once again, about the novelty of scarves and wool and coats, but it really is an exciting recharge to my wardrobe. It's like back-to-school shopping, except I don't have to worry about accidentally touching someone's A.B.C. gum under my desk, or defending my sartorial decision to wear a tie to school when I was 14, or fuss over who was picking me up from school, (because I didn't get a parking spot in my school's lottery, of course). Plus, as much as I love New York City, the weather here is close to terrible, with the exception of a few glorious weeks in each season. Those weeks are now, so I'm savoring them, big time.
Before making any big new introductions to my wardrobe, I made it my business to clear a ton out, with a bevvy of goods taken to local thrift shops or donated to charities, (tip: Buffalo Exchange on Driggs and North 9th now have a ton of my old clothes). I'm trying my best confront and make amends with my compulsion to shop, and become more conscious of what I buy. Rather than meaningless shopping, I want to try to focus my consumerism on pieces I'll keep in my wardrobe forever - like the glitter heels and DVF coat that made their way into my wardrobe last winter, or the leather jacket I snagged on sale for under $60 that I literally would not be able to live without.
I made my first major fall purchase yesterday, a gorgeous chartreuse coat that looks so good against my red hair, (modesty!), which I'm sure I'll be cherishing for decades. At least, I hope; chartreuse is a classic color, right? Anything else that enters my wardrobe will have to pass some kind of litmus test. A quirky, timeless clutch, a well fitting pair of jeans, classics with flair... Those are the things I want to invest in, and "build a wardrobe" with. Of course, being able to invest in something as superficial as my wardrobe, at all, is an enormous privilege - but here I go again making points that should be their own entirely separate posts... And, hey, note to self: this is a wishlist, not a to-do list.
