One of my favorite things about spending time back in LA (my hometown, which is different in basically every. single. way. since I left for NY over a decade ago), is that there is so much diversity in the landscapes within a close distance. There are snowy mountaintops, and gorgeous coastlines (Malibu! Big Sur! Monterey!), the deserts of Palm Springs and Joshua Tree, and of course the beauty of Northern California - from the colorful city and bay in San Francisco to the forests in Redwood and stunning Napa Valley. I'm making it a mission to get out and explore different locales in my home state as frequently as possible, if for no other reason, to mix things up and renew my love and sense of discovery for my old-and-new-again home.
In that spirit, Ali and I hopped in our car and headed out to Palm Springs for a mini-getaway last weekend. Last time we visited Palm Springs we stayed at the Saguaro (a fun, colorful, but super bare-bones hotel.) Since we were only going for one night, I decided it was worth the splurge to stay at The Parker, which has the most gorgeous grounds, the best restaurant, and fluffy featherbeds; even the in-room toiletries - like Hermes soap (yes, that exact one) and Bvlgari lotions - are all super luxurious (and I definitely took them all home, no shame).
I love drawing inspiration for my outfits from my surroundings, so for a city filled with midcentury design flourishes and that is a major destination for designers like Trina Turk and Jonathan Adler, I had to pick up something bright and colorful that played on the desert's retro-modern aesthetic, (this dress was the obvious winner). Also, despite being early February (I'm still shocked by this, honestly), it was an amazing 82-degrees during our stay -- so a great heeled sandal was a must. I fell in love with this pair for its subtle gold details and chunky gold heel, (plus, they're under $100! Score!)
